ADJUSTING THE U.S. ELECTION PROCESS - MORE FAQ

DO THE ORDINARY FOLKS EVEN CARE ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN POLITICS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY OUR GOVERNING BODIES?

There may be a fair amount of apathy that has developed over time and it is probably quite natural to feel ‘disgust’ with how our Congress conducts business. This would be further aggravated by what is now being dubbed ‘The Do Nothing Congress’. But that is exactly why it is important for all taxpayers to take at least enough interest in our Election Process and the makeup of those who occupy seats in our Nations Capitol to voice your opinion, even if it is to do no more than cast a vote.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CONTACT YOUR ‘REPRESENTATIVES’? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO THEY ARE?

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd - This is an excellent site from which to gather information.

THERE HAS BEEN SOME DISCUSSION ABOUT LIMITING ALL REPRESENTATIVES TO JUST ONE TERM - CAN YOU EXPAND UPON THIS?

In the just mentioned website:

you will see a heading labeled Statistics and a link under that heading. Take a look at the chart on ‘reelection of representatives’. This supports the theory that we have definitely drifted towards what could be called a ‘career congress’.

What the length of a term for a Representative or Senator should be, ie., 2, 4 or 6 years, needs a lot of discussion. What doesn’t seem to need a lot of discussion is whether or not a Representative or a Senator should be allowed run for a second term.

If we the people are going to do some housecleaning in Washington D.C., multiple terms must go. Just on your own, think of the numerous benefits that having all representatives on a one term basis would do for our country. And certainly do not be led into thinking that we do not have enough people resources in this country to easily handle new, fresh and forward thinking men and women who could step up and be GREAT legislators as terms expired in Congress. This question also leads into the next question.

THERE HAS BEEN SOME DISCUSSION ON THE QUESTION, SHOULD THERE BE SOME KIND OF EQUAL OR LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY SPENT ON CAMPAIGNS?

House Ethics Committee Parties On”

The House ethics committee continues to live up to its reputation of favoring lobbyist access over ethics. Their new rule gives the green light to large lobbyist soirees at the national party conventions this year. This flies in the face of the new lobbying reform law. Take action!

White House: NOT for Sale - The highest office in America should not be for sale. Yet, the presidential candidates are collecting truck loads of cash from bundlers and big donors. The “Presidential Funding Act of 2007″ would fix this by modernizing the presidential public funding system. Take action!”

THE ABOVE WAS TAKEN FROM A WEBSITE THAT WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO INVESTIGATE: www.cleanupwashington.org

CORRUPTION (SMALL OR LARGE) WILL ALWAYS EXIST AND THRIVE IF GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING.

On another note, it is interesting to see that the National Popular Vote has now garnered another state - Vermont - the 15th state to pass this bill. Click on the National Popular Vote icon in the right margin to go to their website and learn more about this organization.

PERSONAL NOTE: A big thank you is in order to Rip Davis of Arizona for his hours of research he has conducted that have resulted in providing a lot of  information that has been written in this and previous Posts. Thanks Rip.

ADJUSTING THE U.S. ELECTION PROCESS - FAQ

THIS IS THE FOURTH POST IN THIS SERIES

Q. Should the ‘playing field’ for all candidates entered in a national election be level when it comes to exposure?

A. Basically, what we are talking about here is MONEY. Here are some of the problems that we, the voting public have with the present system:

1) The mass media for the most part ignores ‘neutrality’, this leaves the viewer with the decision of trying to determine just how factual is the information being put forth. Is it being skewed by whoever is doing the writing or reporting? My guess would be 99% of the people watching a news caste of some kind, would not take it upon themselves to research the validity and the truth of what is being reported.

[ There was a great sound bit (not even called that in those days probably) in the TV Series Gun Smoke when Doc Holiday asked Festus “why don’t you learn to read?” and Festus came right back with this classic “How do you know that the guy that wrote the reading wrote the reading right?”]

People really need to be educated on the fact that what they read in the newspapers or see on TV can be very bias and very slanted and because of that, have to be very careful at not taking things at face value. Many times when you have first hand knowledge of a particular event and then see it reported - you can hardly recognize it because it has been so misreported. (Can you imagine the difference in media coverage today as compared to the 18th Century when our Constitution was written - Do we need some changes? Of course and the writers intend for the Constitution to be updated!)

2) What is the answer to obtaining a level playing field when it comes to candidate expenditure? I am not sure. But what I am sure of is that if we the people want to have an ‘equal’ look at those candidates running for office, something has to be done to bring this about.

He/she who has the most funds at their disposal gets the most advertising, the biggest team in the field, the most media coverage and on and on - this doesn’t give us a balanced look at each candidate. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want any mass media telling me who I should vote for.

Bottom line - all candidates should be on a level playing field when it comes to how much money each candidate can spend on campaigning.

Q. How do we get away from ‘professional’ politicians and get fresh, smarter, stronger people with solid morality into the Congress and White House?

A. Term limits is one answer. Many have suggested variations of this but here is one scenario:

1) Limit all U.S. Senators and Representatives to one six year term. Every two years, one third of each of these bodies would rotate so that every six years a complete and fresh change in leadership of our country has taken place. Limit the office of President to one six year term.

2) During the period of time that a Senator or Representative is serving his/her six term, they would not be eligible to run for another office. What a fantastic thing that would be. Right now we have three Senators whom we the taxpayers are paying to be Senators, but who are spending most of their time campagning for the Presidential office, and whom continue to accept their pay as Senators - tell me where anything like this could be accomplished in any other setting?!

There maybe a few negatives to the above scenario, but the positives should far and away outweigh those negatives and make for outstanding leadership of America.

Q. Does the U.S. have a sufficient pool of the right kind of talent to be able to provide and sustain this type of Congressional and Presidential leadership?

A. Absolutely! But in order to tap into that talent, there has to be a big change in what Washington D.C. represents to the majority of us. That is why these changes are so desperately needed. We the people will not get the kind of leadership we want and need because most of these kinds of people will not step into the political and leadership corruptness that exists with our ‘do nothing’ Congress of today.

Q. Some feel that you are leaning to far left with some of the ideas presented in these Posts, what do you say?

A. We are trying not to lean in any direction. We don’t consider these issues as being right, left, Republican or Democrat - just American.

We’ll be back with more Q&A’s. In the meantime you might want to go to our Products page and scroll down to a Book called “Where Have All the Leaders Gone?” and read the excerpts.

Make it a great week.

ADJUSTING THE US ELECTION PROCESS - ELEMENTS F0R CONSIDERATION

THIRD POST IN THIS SERIES - CONSIDERING THOSE ELEMENTS WITHIN OR RELATED TO THE ELECTION PROCESS THAT NEED ADJUSTING.

Sticking with the election element - MONEY and closely related items, lets pick up our discussion from the Second Post.

EVERYBODY ELSE DOES IT!

How do you honestly feel about this scenario:

Four people are still in the race for President of U.S.A. as of this writing. Three of the four are Senators. Lets just interject something here - to our knowledge, not one of these three have taken a temporary leave of absence and asked that therefore their Senators salary be suspended during the time they were campaigning.

Can you imagine having a boss who would say to you, “John/Mary, I understand you want to leave your job for six to twelve months and you would also like to have your salary continued during this time and that is just fine.” Right!

He or She would probably say, depending on your position and how well you were performing your job, “we can work around your absenteeism for that period, but you will need to find and interview a replacement for that period, because after all if we could get along without you for six months we probably don’t need that job slot anymore - somebody has to take your place while you are gone, and obviously, we will not pay you any compensation for that period.

What do we in essence say as the boss - we the taxpayers paying the Senators salary - no problem! We’ll continue to pay you while you are not on the job and perhaps implied, we say - we don’t need to replace you for that period of time because you’re not …… (you fill in the blanks).

In conclusion with this particular scenario - there are three Senators, absent from the job they were hired to do and campaigning for President while collecting their regular salary from we the taxpayers for that job they are not doing, all running against a fourth person who is paying his own way to run for President. It is kind of hard to believe this isn’t an excerpt from some novel.

KEY POINTS FOR DISCUSSION

1. All who run for an elected office need to be on a level playing field in terms of money expenditures during the campaigning process.

Why is this important? The amount of money spent should not be a factor in such matters as for example electing a President of the U.S.. We the people have a much higher standard - we want any candidate to fully disclose who he or she is, what do they stand for, what is their track record, why they think they could lead our country, and a summary of their plan for action over the term of their Presidency.

(This point will be expanded upon in the next POST)

2. Something that follows closely with the MONEY issue is TERM in office.

Why is this important? If for example, all members of Congress would be employed for a seat in either the Senate or the House for just one term (six years?) and couldn’t run for any other office during that time without resigning and being replaced, that would fix the present day problem.

It also would eliminate all that ‘away from the job’ campaigning for re-election, probably eliminate a lot ‘pork barreling’ and result in a much more productive Congress.

(This point will be expanded upon in latter POSTS)

There are other issues besides these two that are in need of some attention and we will get to those as we proceed.

Again, you comments are extremely important, so please be sure and go to the comments section and let us know what you are thinking.

Make it a great day - every day and may God bless all your efforts.

ADJUSTING THE U.S. ELECTION PROCESS - DOES IT NEED TO BE DONE?

SECOND POST IN THIS SERIES

[If you didn’t have a chance to read the First Post - scroll down to the preceeding Post to get up to speed]

It is important to understand who these Posts are about. They are about ‘us’, about ‘we’ the common folks in America who are citizens and taxpayers.

WE = TEAM AMERICA

The beginning of the definition for TEAM AMERICA looks like this:

  1. We are neither far right or far left in the Political arena
  2. We represent approximately 80% of the voting population
  3. We are Christian - for the most part
  4. We judge not by color, looks, or religious preference but by character and performance
  5. We are hard working folks and haven’t got much time allocated for demonstrations
  6. We care about our fellow Americans and we care about our Country
  7. We will always step up and lend a hand in a crisis - FOR THE REST OF THE DEFINITION - CLICK ON ‘TEAM AMERICA’ ABOVE

WHAT ARE SOME CHANGES IN THE ELECTION PROCESS THAT SHOULD BE MADE?

In order to stimulate your inputs, we are putting forward some thoughts that we think should be debated and should be given careful consideration to bringing our election process into the 21st century.

CAMPAIGN SPENDING

In the First Post, this (money) was the trigger that launched this series. Understand, we are not endorsing or condemning any candidate in these Posts, but may use some of them as examples of what we are presenting.

OPINION: We should not be selecting (or electing) our candidates based on the criteria that he who spends the most has the best chance of winning.

‘Fair and Balanced’ is a slogan used by one of the leading TV Cable Broadcasting Companies. It would seem logical that a slogan similar to this also should be used when it comes to ‘presenting the candidates’ who are competing for election.

Romney, a candidate for President, has reportedly already spent approximately 35 million dollars of his own money along with having raised many millions of dollars - which most candidates have to do if they have any chance at all of getting elected. Under our present system, all of this okay.

Currently, under our present system, MONEY is not only a huge issue, it either directly or indirectly trumps all other related issues when it comes to our election process.

It is absolutely imperative that we develop a system whereby all ‘qualified’ candidates are on equal footing when it comes to their presentation to the ‘people’ - us - as to why they should be elected. ‘Qualified’ candidates is mentioned in brief here only to signal that in another discussion the process should involve narrowing the field based on each candidates qualifications - which should not include their ability to raise money nor their own personal fortunes in which they are willing to spend a percentage to try and achieve election.

Unfortunately, we know that there will be nothing close to ‘fair and balance’ when it comes to presentation of candidates by the media under today’s process of electing people. The general media is mentioned because it (the media) is the obvious recipient of much of those millions of dollars being spent in the campaign process.

That in itself does not make the media wrong under our current system, however as a result of this money it most likely produces the tendency to skew the supposed neutrality that they are thought by the ‘people’ to be embracing.

[If you think that the media is unbiased and neutral and just reporting the news instead of trying to make the news fit their own bias - think again - this incidentally is a distortion of the Consititution. A subject that will be discussed at a later date]

OPINION: It is thought that there are many qualified men and women in America who have excellent leadership, management, people skills, etc., who would be excellent candidates for President or Congress but who also would never run for election because of the current ‘legacy’ in Washington D.C. and who have no desire to be a ‘fund raiser’ nor neither can or want to spend their own money to run for office. Is that what we really want?

There are a number of other issues related to the question ‘DO WE NEED TO ADJUST THE ELECTION PROCESS AND BRING IT INTO THE 21st CENTURY? However, so as to keep a clear focus, it is felt we should tackle one issue at a time within this topic.

The first issue then becomes the spending issue and spawns the question: What would be the best way to assure that:

1) We people have the opportunity to vote for the very best candidates this Country can produce.

2) Are we casting our vote based our personal convictions and with clear understanding of ‘who’ the candidate is and ‘what’ the candidate stands for and ‘what’ the candidate can bring to that job, because there has been equal time of presentation?

A BOOK OF INTEREST

Here is an excerpt from a new book that is right up near the top of the Best Sellers - ‘REAL CHANGE’ written by former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich.

real-change.jpg

“Americans believe overwhelmingly that we need a change in course. Americans are surprisingly united in this belief, and in the conviction that real change will never come from Washington. On this, like so many things, Americans are absolutely right.”

“The media tells us that America is divided between conservative red states and liberal blue states. They tell us that red and blue are equally divided - which is why elections are so close, why Congress seems gridlocked, and why nothing ever seems to get done in Washington.”

“But that’s simply not true. The reality is the American people are united on almost every important issue facing our country. The real division is between the red-white-blue America (about 85 percent of the Country) and a fringe on the left (about 15 percent of the Country). Not only have the media perpetuated the myth that the country is equally divided, but the elites on the left fringe have also insisted that their positions hold moral superiority. Neither is true.”

THIS MIGHT BE CLOSE TO BEING CALLED ‘A MUST READ’

Even though you may not agree with everything, you will find it very thought provoking, it pushes one into expanding your own thought processes and truly makes you step out of the box (THIS IS CERTAINLY WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IN DECIDING THIS POST QUESTION - DOES THE U.S. ELECTION PROCESS NEED ADJUSTING?)

Dr. Larry Sabato, America’s best known political scientist, puts forth a road map on how to bring the U.S. Constitution into the St Century. “The Founding Fathers never intended for the Constitution to be timeless”. “No society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. The earth belongs to the living generation” - Thomas Jefferson”

This book will ask readers to set aside their own political loyalties, to look past the current ‘values’ debates and hot-button issues, to consider this very real possibility; that the failure of the nation to update the Constitution and the structure of government it originally bequeathed to us is at the root of our current political dysfunction.” - Larry J. Sabato (Author of A More Perfect Constitution)

Did you know that a mere 17% of the voters elect a majority of senators? “Americans feel increasingly disconnected from the political process - indeed, half or more don’t even vote in many elections. All of this would have horrified Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and the other founders.” Dr. Larry Sabato presents twenty three creative and dynamic proposals to reinvigorate American governance. ADJUSTING THE U.S. ELECTION PROCESS - DOES IT NEED TO BE DONE?

First Post in this Series - Determine the necessity of change

I was watching a panel of ‘experts’ on TV after the results of the Iowa vote were known, discussing various candidates and their chances of becoming President of the United States. One of the panelists said something to this effect: “Huckabee does not have the money or the team to be able to launch a winning campaign in the bigger states like California, New York, , Texas and so forth, and therefore, cannot win the election”. All the panelists seemed to agree with that statement. Since that time, similar statements have been voiced in the media by newscast personnel about various candidates as the Primaries continue.

STOP - FREEZE THAT FRAME!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? DOES THIS STRIKE YOU AS THERE BEING SOMETHING WRONG WITH OUR ELECTION PROCESS?

It would seem that the reason to have an election should be for the purpose of achieving the election of the most highly qualified man or woman that we possibly can for any given job.

Put another way, the desired results for having an election? Be it for the President of the United States, for a seat in the hallowed halls of the United States Congress or for any other elected position, we the taxpayers should hire through the election process, the most outstanding men and women whom are willing to step forward and serve our Country.

If the process to do this is such that it hampers, discourages or even eliminates many highly qualified people from participating, this is wrong and something needs to be fixed.

THE PROCESS and GOAL OF THIS PUBLICATION

Let me ask you something - have you ever been involved in a conversation with one or more people and the discussion revolved around what you perceive to be a really important issue? How many times when this has happened and you all end up being in agreement and knowing that a change should take place, but that is the end of it - everybody moves on? I think we have all been through that mental exercise probably more times then we care to admit.

That brings us to the purpose of this Website. We want to zero in on what the vast majority of Americans feel are critical issues, discuss them here, reach a consensus if we can, and then seek reasonable and agreed upon solutions. From there we will move into the action phase, if the majority are in agreement. Since this is an election year and since we felt strongly about the need for an adjustment of our election process, it was decided to make this our first issue we would tackle. If by your vote you are in agreement with this direction, we will press forward in developing solutions for bringing the U.S. Election Process into the 21st Century.

This is far more then just a platform for opinions to be posted on a given subject. This might be called a “get it done” platform. Its about realizing solutions to problems or issues which will keep our beloved America, a strong, vibrant Nation guided by Christian values while maintaining separation of Church and State - as it was founded - as it has been - as it is - as it must be in the future.

GIGANTIC BUT EXCITING CHALLENGE

Reaching a consensus of a very large majority of voters on any given subject is a gigantic task, but this is exactly the mission we are embarking on. Without trying to be naive, without being foolish enough to not recognize the magnitude of attempting to gather most of the taxpayers into one camp so that a change in the election process can happen, we need to: TAKE OFF OUR POLITICAL CAPS AND GET TO WORK - WE NEED TO TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY FROM THE PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS.

If there ever was a subject about CHANGE - this is it. Yes, I know, some of you will say “I hate change”, but put your ‘positive cap’ on and embrace these potential changes as being symbols of your caring about this and future generations and caring about our great Country. As a team, which we definitely are, a team that represents the make up of 80% of the population of the United States, we will cause these very positive changes to take place.

STAY FOCUSED - EYES ON THE TARGET

In this issue, we are not going to try and put forth any specific thoughts we have regarding a possible direction(s) this first issue should take. First, it is important to determine if most would agree that we do need to make some adjustment to the Election Process. That being the case we can start to move the process forward - carefully. It is also important that we stay focused and not wander into adjacent areas of concern at this point - one issue at a time. It will be very tempting to do just that, however, our eyes for now must stay on this target - ADJUST THE ELECTION PROCESS?

By the way, did you know that the Electoral College was born when our first president of the U. S. (George Washington)was elected over two hundred years ago, and hasn’t been changed since. I mention this only because one of the solutions to this process will undoubtedly be to address the Electoral College.

Rip Davis said: “Thank You for giving us a forum to discuss positive ways to help bring this country (back) together.

I’ve been wanting to express views on critical issues such as the current dysfunctional elections process, and sharing others ideas toward solutions to problems or issues, from a segment of America (“the middle class”) that is usually ignored by our current political Representatives”. Read the his whole comments when you go to register your thoughts on this subject. ”

Ed Piegza said: “Regarding the election process, that is a very complex subject. I do not believe we should have campaign finance laws, such as we now have. In a free society, we should be able to spend our money in ways that we want, not be bound by government laws which infringe on free speech.”

When you put in your comments, if you wouldn’t mind being quoted in future issues, just put your first name and the state you are from. If you would liked to be recognized for a specific quote, also put your last name and city you are from.

BOOK NO. ONE

A MORE PERFECT CONSTITUTION

Here is an interesting quote from Dr. Jonathan Dolhenty from his review of this relatively new publication

“There is little doubt in my mind that the office of the president is due for a serious makeover. More important, in my opinion, is the structure of the Congress. I don’t believe that the Founding Fathers intended the creation of a class of “professional politicians” who would be elected to the House or the Senate and then spend their entire life occupying a chair there, spending the bulk of their time running for reelection, becoming pawns of special interest groups, and enriching themselves at the public trough.”

You can read this whole review at Amazon.com, it is a great read all in itself.

BOOK NO.TWO

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Although this book is more political in nature and there are things said that not everybody will agree with, non the less, Laura Ingram, gives you her thoughts straight from the shoulder and it is packed full of thought stimulating actions.

Power to the PeopleFrom her book “If you are like most Americans, you’re fed up with sell-out politicians who won’t defend our borders; a Hollywood that peddles profanity, pornograhpy and Al Gore and Rosie O’Donnell as entertainment; schools that teach our kids more about condoms than about the Constitution and snooty judges that think it is there job to legislate for us. But there is a way to stop this madness and return the power to the people where it belongs.

Here are a few comments that Craig Matteson, a professional book reviewer had to say (His whole review can be seen at Amazon.com): “She (Laura) is a person who is passionate about traditional moral values, protecting the family, enforcing the country’s laws and our Constitution, and cleaning up the culture from what she calls its pornification.

In her book she pleads with everyday conservatives to stand up and speak up about the things that we see as going dead wrong with our culture. Laura also expresses her faith in God and her gratitude for the second chance she has gotten in surviving her bout with cancer. For me, hearing expressions of faith and gratitude are among the most beautiful uses of the human mind, voice and heart..”
